Catalogue Note
First edition, the Marsden J. Perry copy. As a youth, Rainolds played the female role of Hippolyta in Palamon and Arcite at Oxford, as part of an entertainment for Queen Elizabeth. He later recalled his performance with embarrassment, as he came to embrace Puritan objections to the theater, being especially critical of cross-dressing roles.
