Catalogue Note
First edition, large-paper copy, intended for private distribution with the imprint "Printed Anno MDCXC." The paper is noticeably thicker and stiffer than the stock used for ordinary paper copies. There are the usual manuscript corrections (pages 11, 33, 39, 40, 42, 57, 70, 90, 92, 103) which, if not by Pepys himself, must have been done at his direction.
Written at the end of his long career, after he was forced to resign from the Admiralty following the Revolution in 1688, his Memoires surveys the proud state of the Navy in 1679. "It represents a side of Pepys's life which is apt to be ignored" (Pforzheimer).
