4to (7 2/16 x 5 1/2 in.; 180 x 137 mm). Minor worming to outer margin through preliminaries, cords a bit loose, some very stray spotting, title with  repaired tear (torn for cancellation according to a note form RSP), closed tear to Oo2, burn hole to Rr2 and Rr3.  Contemporary blind-paneled calf, board edges gilt; minor rubbing along joints, head of spine slightly worn.

First edition, second title, in a contemporary binding. The preliminaries are in the earlier state.

An unsophisticated copy of this landmark of English literature, Church notes only 1,300 copies of the work were printed, with some six variant issues of the title page. Copies of any early state are scarce in a period binding.
