Small folio (11 3/8 x 7 3/8 in.; 289 x 187 mm). Title within a woodcut architectural border, decorative woodcut initials; worm punctures in the first third of the book, dampstain in upper portion of last three quires more extensive in last quire, two rust holes in fore-margin of last three leaves. Contemporary London blindstamped calf over wooden boards [Oldham's rolls HM a 3 & HM a 6], remains of clasps and catches; rebacked with later gilt-stamped labels, some wormholes in both covers.

Catalogue Note
Second edition, third issue. The first book follows closely the Historia major of Matthew Paris, while the second book is an abridgement from the same work with additions extending the period from 1067 to 1307. Shakespeare used this work for many of the minor plot details in King John.
