Catalogue Note
First edition, first issue, with the dated title-page. A fine copy in a contemporary Cambridge binding. Herbert's religious verse was prepared for the press after his death by Nicolas Ferrar, Herbert's intimate who founded the Anglican community of Little Gidding. (Herbert had instructed Ferrar to burn his papers or publish them, if the latter would be to "the advantage of any dejected poor Soul.")
The Temple, which shows the clear influence of Donne, quickly gained a wide reputation and went through five editions in five years.
