Description
- The English Vineyard Vindicated.... London: by J. Grismond for John Crook, at the shop in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1666.

Small 8vo (5 1/2 x 3 1/2 ins.; 137 x 86 mm). Woodcut initital letter. Folding engraved plate of the ordering and binding of vines; very occasional faint scattered spotting, but a fine copy bound with original blanks. Nineteenth century green straight-grain morocco, gilt, gilt edges, spine with vine-leaf ornaments.

Catalogue Note
Rare first edition of one of the earliest works on English viticulture.
While it was Rose, the King's gardener, that provided the useful instruction herein, it was Evelyn who edited his observations into a more literary form.
Wing records only three copies of the first edition, the conventional explanation being the original printing was a casualty of the Great Fire of London.
