Two works bound in one, each with different formats. Essaies: 12mo; Apophthegmes: 8vo, both (5 x 2 3/4 in.; 127 x 70 mm), woodcut headpiece and printer's ornaments on title-page of Essaies and section title for Of the Colours, good and euill, a fragment, woodcut initials, some faint contemporary annotations; title-page strengthened along inner margin, minor loss to lower corner of C1 not affecting text. Apophthegmes: Title within double-ruled border, text within ruled border with marginal column for side-notes; light foxing and browning.  Modern full polished calf paneled gilt, red morocco lettering pieces on spine, plain endpapers and edges.

The third edition of the Essaies, and the second in 12mo format. Rare, no other copy of this edition has appeared at auction, save for the present copy; and only three copies of this, the first edition, of Apophthegmes have sold at auction since 1967.
