McKerrow 379, without the possibly inserted letters), title within an ornamental border, woodcut and type-ornament head- and tailpieces; loss to lower fore-edge corner of E6 costing about forty words, cut close at top with a few headlines and page numbers shaved, some staining and finger-soiling. Contemporary blind-ruled calf; rebacked and refurbished.

Catalogue Note
Third edition of "the last and perhaps greatest of the Elizabethan songbooks" (Hayward). Of the first edition, 1602, only three copies survive, of which only one (Morgan) is complete; of the second edition, 1608, only the Huntington and imperfect Harvard copies are known. The dedication (to William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke) and preface are both signed "Fra. Davison." Davison's compilation contains verse by the editor and his brother Walter Davison, as well as by Campion, Donne, Raleigh, Spenser, and others. Very rare: this is perhaps the only copy to appear at auction since the Huth sale in 1912.
