Woodcut architectural title border, woodcut headpieces and decorative initials, with the two final blank leaves (the last used as a pastedown), extensive contemporary marginalia leaves G4-I2; light marginal soiling. Contemporary limp vellum; some light soiling and a few small stains.

Catalogue Note
First edition, large-paper copy, one of about 200 copies printed for the author; in his errata note (leaf Gg2) the author remarks: "... after this private impression, which is but of a few copies for my friends, I will amend what is amisse in the publique." The history ran from immediately before the Norman conquest to the death of King Stephen (1154); a second part, appearing in 1618, continued it to the end of Edward III's reign. Daniel urged his friends "to comment on what he had done so far (the friends included Camden, Cotton, and Sir Peter Manwood, the antiquarian). The 1612 quarto must have been an immediate success since the Stationers bought the book outright from Daniel (over two hundred copies) and reprinted it in 1613" (ONDB).
The marginal notes, in both English and Latin, provide thoughtful commentary and extract moral exempla.
