Half-title bearing the royal arms, the first two words of the title printed in Greek, engraved folding frontispiece of Charles I at prayer by William Marshall and two engraved portraits; light stain in fore-margin of a few leaves early on. Contemporary dark brown morocco paneled in gilt, thistle under fleur-de-lys devices at corners of inner panel, all enclosing the crowned C.R cypher with death's head beneath, smooth spine gilt with title in blind within gilt compartment, edges gilt; some minor rubbing to joints.

Catalogue Note
a fine emblematic binding of this extraordinarily popular work (Wing records forty-four distinct editions in 1648 and 1649), purported to be the Charles I's prison diary. Authorship is now accredited to John Gauden, though it is probable he included some authentic writings of the king. "If it had come out a week earlier, the king might have been preserved" (Lowndes). Somber binding designs like that on the Pirie copy are common for Eikon Basilike, but the present is in an unusually fresh state of preservation.
