Engraved architectural title by William Hole, woodcut head- and tailpieces, decorative woodcut initials, with the blank leaf Cc4; lacking leaf Dd2 ("rarely present" Pforzheimer) and final blank leaf, dampstains largely throughout, fore-edge of first few leaves frayed entering platemark on title, hole in leaf A6 affecting a few words, tear in fore-margin of lead Dd1 without loss. Contemporary blind-tooled calf; rebacked with original spine laid down, corners mended.

Catalogue Note
First edition of 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 12th books, the other books having already appeared in 1598, from the library of the great jurist Edward Coke. The "rarely present" leaf Dd2 contains a sonnet to Lady Wrothe and another to the Countess of Montgomery. Of extraordinary rarity for such a famous title, this work has not appeared at auction in the past fifty years.
