Catalogue Note

first edition, now often attributed to hobbes.

Comprisisng twelve "Observations" ("Of arrogance," "of ambition," "of affectation," etc.) and four longer discourses, the present is sometimes also attributed to William Cavendish, Baron Chandos, and to Gilbert Cavendish. Recent scholars have argued that three of the discourses were written by a young Thomas Hobbes while tutor to Cavendish. Scarce.
