Catalogue Note

Presentation copy, with a manuscript poem and a drawing by Russell for American art historian Arthur Kingsley Porter (1883–1933), owner of Glenveagh Castle in Co. Donegal. The twelve-line autograph poem is headed "Kingsley Porter's ideal poem, imagined by A. E." and dated 22 July 1931.  The crayon drawing on the title page depicts a girl reading under a tree with the sea in the distance. It is signed "AE" in crayon and "George Russell 'AE'" in ink.

Robert Pirie has inscribed the front free endpaper in pencil, "The title page watercolor was done by AE while staying at Glenveagh Castle, the Irish castle of Arthur Kingsley and my great-great aunt Lucy, the aunt of my grandmother Ellen Borden (later Carpenter). RSP." Below this is Ellen Borden's signature in ink.
