Catalogue Note
Corrected proof copy of the first play O'Casey wrote after his move from Ireland to England, signed and with corrections in the author's hand. In addition to O'Casey's corrections to the text, he has inscribed the front cover of the brown paper wrappers, "Press. Subject to mistakes indicated being corrected. Note. there is to be an appendix of music to the book — I assume that you are already aware of this. With Compliments, Sean O'Casey."
Within the Gates was originally conceived as a screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock. It was not a success on the London stage when it opened in 1933.
