Catalogue Note
This drawing is a study for a figure within Paul and Thomas Sandby’s watercolor Ascot Heath Races (see Jane Roberts, Views of Windsor Watercolours by Thomas and Paul Sandby, London, p. 134, no. 47). That work was painted in circa 1765 and acquired by George, Prince of Wales in 1799. Thomas Sandby was responsible for the landscape elements of the composition, while his younger brother Paul invented the large crowd of figures, who are shown watching the end of an exciting horserace. Other drawings by Paul connected to this watercolor survive in the Royal Collection, the Paul Mellon Centre for British Art and Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery.
