plain hemispherical with tall stirrup-shaped handles, engraved on one side with contemporary arms in baroque cartouche, marked on base.

Catalogue Note

The arms are those of the son of Sir Peter Delmé Lord Mayor, also named Peter, b. 1710, M.P. who married 1st in 1737 Anna Maria, daughter of Sir John Shaw, Bt., of Eltham, who died in 1740 and  2nd Christian Pain, also of Eltham., according  to Burke’s Landed Gentry, he was M.P. for Ludgershall 1734-41 and for Southampton 1741-1754, freeman of the town. Known as a patron of the arts, influential in the Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society, sometimes called “Peter the Czar” in reference to his wealth, he spent much of  his fortune  and finally  shot himself in Grosvenor Square.
