Catalogue Note
Departing from the Neoclassical fashion dominating sculpture in the early 19th century, Francois Rude presented a version of a young Pescatore at the 1831 Paris Salon. The success of Rude's fisherboy inspired many other sculptors, mostly Italian, like Gemito, Torelli, Scheggi, and D'Orsi to name a few. All played with the human body as it exists before our eyes, capturing various poses from seated or kneeling, to full-length standing portraits. They often rendered young boys gathering shellfish and crabs as seen in this lot by Martini, a recurring composition often known as Neapolitan Fisherboys.
