Condition

Each oil on canvas. The original canvas has been cut and laid down onto a larger canvas. The Male Bacchante: there is bumping in the canvas, likely from the folded velvet on the matting board. Craquelure across the picture surface. Small scattered losses in the figure’s chest and in the left arm. The Female Bacchante: there is bumping in the canvas, likely from the folded velvet on the matting board, especially at upper left. There is a loss in the flower garland around her head. There appears to be a piece of painted over tape in the upper right quadrant, covered by the current framing. The edges of the original canvas have been covered with tape, and there are some minor losses near these edges.
