Description

  • Helen Levitt
  • Girls Dancing Above 96th Street Near 1st Avenue
  • gelatin silver prints
a suite of 5 photographs, each signed and numbered '19A' in pencil on the reverse, circa 1940 (5)

Condition

This suite of early warm-toned contact prints on semi-matte paper are in generally good to very good condition. There are a few very small, occasional creases that appear to break the emulsion. The prints are slightly irregularly trimmed. Each photograph is signed and annotated '19A' (the film roll number) in pencil on the reverse, and 3 are also annotated 'no neg' in pencil. They are very slightly soiled and yellowed near the edges. One has rust colored soiling at the top edge on the reverse that is also visible along the top edge on the front. When viewed in ultraviolet light, these prints do not appear to fluoresce.
