a group of 3 photographs, comprising 'Gladiolus,' 'Iris Reticulata,' and 'A Dahlia Shoot After Disbudding,' printing-out-paper prints, each initialed and titled in pencil on the reverse, circa 1900 (3)
Condition
These early, possibly unique warm-toned prints, on double-weight paper with a glossy surface, are in generally very good condition. There are occasional, faint, pin-point impressions that do not break the emulsion across the surface of the print. These are visible only under raking light. The reverse of each of the prints is age-darkened and lightly soiled.
Dahlia: Upon close examination, a few small deposits of original retouching are visible. There is a very thin margin at the top edge of the print, and the edges have been trimmed unevenly. The edges are slightly ripped, with attendant edge chipping. The full title in pencil on the reverse reads: 'A Dahlia shoot - after disbudding / C. J.' '(VZ (AO) 6DR' is written in pencil in an unidentified hand.
Gladiolus: There is a 3-inch sharp diagonal crease in the upper right quadrant. This breaks the emulsion and has been stabilized on the reverse with three pieces of paper tape. There are a few, very faint, linear, diagonal impressions in the print surface visible under raking light. There is a blue fingerprint that is visible at the upper center edge. The full title in pencil on the reverse reads: 'Gladiolus (illegible) / C.J.' 'Jones,' '154' (circled), and '40 m/m' are written in an unidentified hand in blue pencil and graphite on the reverse.
Iris: The full title in pencil on the reverse reads: 'Iris Reticulata / C.J' '(MC) VX,' and 'E' (circled) are written in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse.
