Description
- William Henry Jackson
- 'Rapids of The Yellowstone, Above The Falls'
- mammoth-plate albumen print
mammoth-plate albumen print, the photographer's credit, title, and number '1102' in the negative, circa 1870s
Condition
Grading this albumen print on a scale of 1 to 10 - a 10 being an albumen print with deep brown dark tones and highlights that retain all of their original detail - this print rates a 7. The dark tones are a rich sepia, but the highlights have become more subdued and slightly yellowed with age.
The print is in generally very good condition. In raking light, scattered long surface scratches, scuffs, and creases are visible upon close examination, as are occasional tiny impressions, some of which appear to break the emulsion. A few tiny deposits of original retouching are visible, and, in the lower right corner of the image, two small flaws in the negative have been retouched on the print.
The mount is appropriately age-darkened at the edges and on the reverse. The mount is rubbed at its periphery, and there are 2 small tears along the bottom and right edges of the mount. The corners are rounded and chipped. None of the issues pertaining to the mount endanger the print.
