Description

  • Brassaï
  • Fille de Joie, Quartier Italie (de Face)
  • Gelatin silver print
ferrotyped, the photographer's studio, copyright, and 'Tirage de l'Auteur' stamps and with numerical notations in pencil and ink on the reverse, framed, 1932, probably printed in the late 1950s or early 1960s (Brassaï: The Monograph, p. 71)

Condition

This ferrotyped print is in generally very good condition. As is typical of ferrotyped prints, in raking light surface scratches and pitting are pervasive throughout the image. Also visible in high raking light are fingerprints, several sharp creases in the corners and along the edges, and impressions from the notations on the reverse of the print. These issues are characteristic of the majority of Brassai's pre-1970s prints. This print is trimmed to the image, and the paper is wavy. The photographer's studio/copyright stamp appears in duplicate on the reverse: '81, Faubourg St-Jacques, PARIS 14eme, Tel. 707.23.41' and '81, Faubourg St-Jacques, PARIS-XIV, Tel. 707-23-41.' The following is written in pencil or ink on the reverse: 'la grosse'; 'Page 93'; 'pp. 333'; '8'; and '88.8%.' There are fingerprints from and handling near the edges on the reverse, and there are two paper-tape hinge remnants along the lower edge. When examined under ultraviolet light, this print appears to fluoresce.
