Description

  • Irving Penn
  • 'Marcel Duchamp'
  • Gelatin silver print
numbered '16 6 - P - 20' in the negative, signed, titled, and annotated in pencil and stamped on the reverse, framed, 1948, one from an edition of no more than 25 gelatin silver prints (MoMA, pl. 13; Moments Preserved, p. 128)

Condition

This early contact print, on double-weight semi-glossy paper, is in generally excellent condition. In raking light, a fabric-like pattern of faint, tiny impressions is visible in the upper left and central areas of the image, likely a result of processing. There is a slight waviness to the lower portion of the print. There is some minor chipping along the black margin edges, and the corners are bumped. On the reverse, the following is written by the photographer in pencil: 'Marcel Duchamp, New York, 1948' and 'Print made close to date of the photograph [initialed].' The Condé Nast copyright stamp is dated '1960' in pencil. The edition information stamp indicates that there are no more than '25' signed gelatin silver prints. In addition to the credit, copyright, reproduction rights, and edition stamps, the reverse is also stamped 'Photograph by Penn.' The following notations are also in pencil on the reverse: 'M. Duchamp 16062 P-20,' 'Ref, 440,' 'S-5,' 'AS,' and 'IP.202.Y.' There is some minimal soiling on the reverse.
