Description
- Berenice Abbott
- 'Pier 14, North River: From West and Fulton Streets’

numbered ‘292’ in the negative, the photographer’s Federal Art Project ‘Changing New York’ and caption stamps, with title, date, and annotations in ink, on the reverse, 1938 (Yochelson, Lower West Side, pl. 6)
Condition
This faintly warm-toned early contact print is on lightly-textured double-weight paper with a surface sheen. It is in generally excellent condition. The upper-sky area is slightly yellowed near the edge of the image. A few tiny deposits of original retouching are visible upon very close examination. As is characteristically seen in Abbott's 'Changing New York' prints from the period, there are small clamp impressions in the black margins from processing. The margin edges are rubbed (with some emulsion loss along the upper edge) and the corners are rounded.
The reverse of the print is appropriately age-darkened at the edges. The 'Changing New York' caption stamp on the reverse is annotated in ink with the following information:
Title: 'Pier 14 North River: From West and Fulton Streets'
Place: 'Manhattan'
Neg. #'292'
Code: 'IIA 1.C IA3'
Date: 'March 23, 1938'
