Description

  • Weegee
  • THE CRITIC
  • Gelatin silver print
ferrotyped, the photographer's 'Please Credit Weegee from Photo-Representatives' stamp, annotated 'first prize / Graflex Contest - / Humor Award' in blue pencil, and with numerical notations in ink on the reverse, 1943 (LIFE, 6 December 1943, p. 38; Weegee's New York, pl. 213, variant cropping)

Condition

This large ferrotyped print, on double-weight paper with a heavy glossy surface, is in generally very good condition. As is frequently seen in other comparable early Weegee prints, a degree of wear and creasing from handling are visible, although primarily concentrated in the far-left portion of the image. Occasional pitting, superficial surface scratches, and fingerprints are visible in raking light. There are a number of sharp creases -- both small and long -- which appear to break the emulsion. The thin white margin corners are creased, and there are two 1/2-inch tears in the left and right margins which extend into the image slightly. The reverse of the print is soiled and age-darkened. The numerical notations on the reverse are in an unidentified hand and are illegible. When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.
