Description

  • Helmut Newton
  • 'MERCEDES AT HOME, PARIS'
  • gelatin silver print
signed, titled, dated, and annotated in pencil on the reverse, 1975 (White Women, unpaginated)

Provenance

Gift to the present owner, 1984

Condition

This early print is in generally good condition. In raking light, the following are visible: two scratches near the model's neck that do not appear to break the emulsion; a few creases and scattered superficial surface scratches not breaking the emulsion, mostly at the lower edge; a few deposits of original retouching; and a slightly matte area to the right of the model, which may have occurred during processing. The print is trimmed to the image, and the edges and corners of the print are bumped and chipped, with attendant losses of emulsion, particularly at the corners. The print is backed with dry-mounting tissue, which is lifting slightly at the lower corners. On the reverse, '1372/22A' is annotated in pencil. Also on the reverse, 'CHN-SCJ-001' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil at the lower left edge. The reverse is lightly soiled.
