Cette image est un des emblèmes de la communauté artistique de l’East Village de Pékin (Dongcun) qui a ouvert la voie à la nouvelle photographie contemporaine chinoise de l’ère post-Tiananmen. Dans l’épreuve d’endurance qui nous est montrée ici, Zhang Huan apparaît assis stoïquement, presque en méditation, dans douze mètres carrés de latrines enduit d’huile de poisson et de miel qui ont attiré les mouches durant la durée de sa performance.
