Condition
Illustration is fine.
Rare model in overall good condition. The horses with a fine patina (slightly red) and expected marks and scratches to the bodies. The gilt-bronze base is fine, with wear and stains to the gilding. Some traces of oxidation and vert de gris.

Catalogue Note
Les sabots des chevaux sont palmés à la manière des chevaux trouvés sur les Triomphes marins. On trouve la trace de ce modèle de chenets dès 1747 dans un inventaire du château de Passy qui appartenait au petit-fils de Samuel Bernard, A-G Bernard de Saint-Saire : l'inventaire dressé le 4 mai 1747 décrit : "un grand feu de cuivre représenatnt un cheval marin appuyé sur des ornements [...] le tout doré d'ormoulu".
Des chenets analogues, reposant sur des bases rocailles plus déchiquetées, sont conservés au musée des Arts décoratifs de Vienne, une autre dans les collections du duc de Buccleuch au château de Boughton. Un chenet est reproduit dans Le XVIIIe siècle Français, Paris, collection Connaissance des Arts, 1956, p. 123.
