Condition
Overall the condition of the wood is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The sculpture is composed in sections, and joints are visible at the back and sides. There are a few minor losses, probably due to past worming, including to Joachim's proper left thumb and drape falling over his proper right arm, the priest's proper right index finger, an attribute in Joachim's proper right hand and possibly one in Mary's hands, Anne's proper left sleeve and drapery at the legs, and the upper edge of the architectural backdrop. There is stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, notably to the bottom under the door and the front, to the front finial at the entrance to the staircase, and to the back. There are several nicks and abrasions, including to the walls of the temple and to Anne's and Mary's noses. There is a hole at the back with a wood insert and a nail to the back at the right side. There is some wear, including flaking, to the polychromy on the wood base, and there are a few abrasions at the corners. The wood group is not attached to the base at the right side and therefore may slide off the base on this side.
