Description
- Reliquary
- coral and silver mounted on gilt copper
- Italian, probably Trapani, late 17th century
formerly containing a later relic of Saint Clementis, with a label inscribed: S. Clementis I.P.M.
Condition
Overall the condition of the reliquary is good, with wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is wear, including some tarnishing, to the gilt copper and silver throughout, and there is greening in a few place, notably to the crevices and to the flowers at the outer corners. There is some warping to the metal, notably to the leaves. The left silver scroll at the bottom of the plaque has detached and accompanies the object. A few of the foliate metal scrolls at the bottom rotate slightly in their settings, and parts of some of the coral flowers are slightly loose. It is possible that some of the pieces of coral have been reattached, as glue residue is visible in a few areas. There are a few small chips and restored breaks to the coral. The metal rod which connects the plaque to the stand is slightly loose in its setting. A small wooden pin has been inserted at the back to stabilise it. The relic is lost.
