Description

  • Two paxes with the Flagellation and the Crucifixion
  • ivory
  • South German, late 17th/ early 18th century
together with a German, 19th century turned ivory and bone microcarving of Calvary with a glass dome

Condition

Overall the condition of the paxes is good with wear and some dirt to the surface consistent with age. Both were made in sections; the handles/ stands were carved separately as well as the cross with Christ and its right and top arms including the proper left arm of Christ on the Crucifixion; the joints of the latter two were probably repaired. Both paxes have some areas with slightly yellow discolouration consistent with the material and the thinly carved Flagellation has five naturally occurring, stable, hairline fissures running along the scene. An ornament to the top right of the Flagellation was lost. There is an area of restoration to the Flagellation's lower edge. The turned ivory has some restorations to the petals of the lower knop and losses to the edge of the base of the little Crucifixion. It may have been reassembled. There is a circular hole to the bone base. It is currently mounted on a perspex base.
