Sponsored by the bishops of Würzburg, Eckardt trained at the Academy in Stuttgart and joined Antonio Canova's studio in Rome in 1796. Shortly before his death he was named Professor of Fine Arts by the Fürstprimas of the Confederation of the Rhine in Aschaffenburg.
