Condition

There are losses to the enamel in the corners of the enamels and the edges due to naturally occurring crizzling. There is further stable crizzling around the areas with losses. There are losses to the gilding throughout. The top cross arm and crown are slightly warped. The proper right ankle has a stable fissure. There is an area of nicks around the proper left wrist and the nose. The knees of Christ are slightly rubbed. Otherwise the condition of this relatively large Limoges crucifix is stable and consistent with age. There are remnants of an adhesive to the reverse. There is wear to the cloth mount throughout.

Catalogue Note

Willem de Monchy (1894-1964) was a major shipowner, board member of some of the foremost Dutch shipping and trade companies, and one of the driving forces behind the Holland-America Line, a firm started by his father, in the early 20th century. He had a seat on the advisory boards of the Museum Boijmans-van Beuningen and the Historisch Museum in Rotterdam. A large part of his extensive collection was donated to the former museum, including Breitner's The Earring and an important group of textiles. See also lots 61 and 102.
