Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is very good with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is some minor greening in the crevices and to the left leg. There is minor wear to the patina at the proper left forearm and the sole of the proper right foot. The figure was cast in sections; joints and round pegs are slightly visible at the shoulders and thighs. The caduceus is missing. The condition of the base is excellent.

Catalogue Note

The facture and finish of the present bronze, with the regular but waxy inside of the base, precise pegged joints at the thighs, and neat patches, suggest it was cast in the 18th century, a time at which Giambologna's Mercury was not reproduced often. The model was cast by Giacomo Zoffoli as early as 1769, but his slightly rough surfaces do not compare well to this bronze (see The Treasures Houses of Britain, exh. cat. National Gallery of Art, Washington, New Haven/ London, 1985, p. 359, no. 286).
