Description

  • Devotional pendant with the Crucifixion
  • partially enamelled gold, set with glass, with later pendants with coral beads and seed pearls
  • Spanish, early 17th century
the titulus inscribed: INRI

Condition

Overall the condition of the pendant is good with wear and some dirt to the surface consistent with age. There are several small losses to the enamel, especially to the inner band on the frame and including to the cross bases of the thieves and above Christ's head. Two loops were lost on the upper half, suggesting that the pendant was formerly suspended on three chains connecting to an element above. The loop at the bottom is warped. The glass at the front can be extracted.

Catalogue Note

Similar oval scroll work frames are found on pendants dated to circa 1600 in Cologne (inv. nr. G 1006 Cl.), the Louvre (OA 2953), and one exhibited in Chicago in 1975 (op.cit.). Typical of such frames is the openwork, the tightly wound scrolls on the edges, and the regular pattern on the band surrounding the aperture. The contents of these pendants range from commessi, to miniatures, to further goldsmith's work.
