Description

  • Domed casket
  • tortoiseshell, with silver mounts
  • Spanish Colonial, Mexico, circa 1700

Condition

Overall the condition of the casket is stable with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age and handling with some tarnishing and remnants of polish to the silver. There are restorations and a few stable splits to the tortoiseshell around the hinges. The edge is reinforced with a piece of metal on the inside at the right front corner. Some of the silver appliques are applied using cotter pins; some are slightly loose. Some of those that rotate have slightly scratched the tortoiseshell. There are a few minor losses and some warping to the silver appliques, particularly at the sides. The silver is slightly torn under the key hole. Part of the latch was replaced using solder and brass.
