Description

  • Trunk decorated with a peacock and other animals
  • partially gilt and polychromed leather, with iron mounts on a cedar core
  • Peruvian, late 17th century
with nine pieces of paper printed with religious engravings and Spanish prayers on the inside of the lid

Condition

There is wear to the leather throughout, including warping and fraying, in particular to the lobes around the lid, some of which are bent outwards or inwards. The leather has ripped in one place on the left side of the lid. There is wear to the paintwork throughout. There is stable splitting to the wood consistent with the material, visible on the inside. There are also a few losses to the wood around the edges. There is wear, including some corrosion, to the iron mounts. The casket cannot be locked.
