Description
- Crucifix
- partially polychromed ivory, on a wood cross with a metal crown of thorns
- Indo-Portuguese, 18th century
Condition
Overall the condition of the ivory is good, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age, with particular dirt in the crevices. The arms are carved separately and joints are visible. A section of the loincloth on the proper right side is carved separately and detaches. There is a small loss to this section. There are losses to four of the fingers on the proper right hand and to three on the proper left hand. One of the toes on the proper right foot is also lost. There is stable splitting to the ivory throughout, consistent with the material. There is some corrosion to the metal nails and mounts and to the crown of thorns, which is slightly loose in its setting. The wood cross is composed of two sections, and the wood rods holding them in place are slightly loose. There is wear to the wood, including some minor stable splitting and a few minor losses around the edges.
