Description

- limestone
- French, Burgundy, circa 1500
Condition
There is dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The sculpture appears to be an architectural sculpture, and there is cement to the underside at the back. The surface is rough in texture. There are various losses including the proper left side of the forehead and hair, to the base on the proper right side at the front, and possibly to some of the branches of the trees. There are various smaller chips, including to the tip of the nose. There are remnants of polychromy, in particular to some of the crevices. There are several drilled holes in the sculpture, including two in the proper right leg, one under the proper right armpit, one in the base at the front, and three in the figure's proper left side at the neck, abdomen and in the leg. There appears to be a filled hole in the proper left lower leg. There are stable open veins behind the figure's head, upper back, and in his proper right lower back and buttock. These appear to be naturally occurring but may have been exacerbated due to weathering. There are chisel marks in the tree trunk and veins, there may also be areas of fill. Otherwise the condition is good in consideration of the function of the sculpture.
