Condition
Overall the condition of the wood figures is good, with dirt and wear to the surfaces consistent with age. There is some wear to the gilding and polychromy, including some losses, in particular to the blue of Simon's dress and mantle, to the gilding at the bottom of Judas's dress, and to Judas's drapery on the proper right side. There is a likely loss to Judas's proper left sleeve at the wrist. There is some stable splitting to the wood consistent with the material, notably to Simon's chest and a section of Judas's drapery on the proper right side. Further splitting is visible at the backs. A semicircular section of Judas's book is carved separately. There is a metal mount for hanging to the back of each figure.

Catalogue Note
The present figures depicting the Apostles Judas and Simon are distinguished by their extraordinarily lifelike appearance and masterfully carved drapery. These qualities have caused them to be associated with the anonymous workshop responsible for the celebrated Kefermarkt Altar in Upper Austria, a defining work of Gothic wood sculpture from the last decade of the 15th century. The Apostles' facial style, with high cheekbones, as well as the pointed folds and waves of their drapery, are shared by the Kefermarkt figures.
