Description

  • Virgin and Child
  • gilt and polychromed limewood
  • Austrian, Salzburg, circa 1515-1520

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. A section of the Virgin's proper left shoulder and drapery on her proper left side is carved separately. The Virgin's proper left hand is carved separately, and is very slightly loose. The little finger on this hand may have been reattached. The Virgin would have held an attribute in her proper left hand, which is now lost. There is wear to the gilding and polychromy throughout, including some craquelure. The polychromy has probably been refreshed in areas, including to the faces. There is some splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, including to some of the folds of the drapery. There is minor evidence of past worming, which is visible at the back and on the palm of the Virgin's proper left hand. There are holes to the Virgin and Christ's heads, which may have supported lost halos.
