Description
- Gaspard Dughet, called Gaspard Poussin
- Landscape with a fisherman before Tivoli
- oil on canvas
Provenance
With Agnew's, London, 1968.
Literature
M.N. Boisclair, Gaspard Dughet, Paris 1986, p. 271, cat. no. 328, reproduced figure 362.
Condition
The canvas has an old relining, which has not overly flattened the paint surface. The varnish is discoloured and the paint surface is dirty. There appears to be wear throughout the darker tones and figures, and there are surface scratches in the foliage of the tree, upper left, and in the sky, upper right. There are two pinprick losses in the centre of the upper margin. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to an old L-shaped tear, measuring approx. 7 cm. in length, upper right, in the sky. The varnish fluoresces opaquely, making it difficult to discern any earlier restoration; there are otherwise only scattered retouchings.
