Description

  • Ferrarese School, 16th Century
  • The Holy Family with Saints Elisabeth and John the Baptist
  • oil on panel, in a tabernacle frame

Condition

The panel is flat and stable, with a single hairline crack in the paint surface running vertically from the centre of the lower edge, measuring approximately 6 cm. (just visible in the catalogue illustration). The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is a little discoloured, but the painting is in overall good condition. The varnish fluoresces milkily under ultraviolet light, which reveals retouching to some pinprick losses on all four margins, some strengthening to the dark areas of Saint Elisabeth's and the Virgin's robes, and in the lower left corner. There is a small area of retouching in the Virgin's hand, and to a surface scratch in the landscape framed in the right-hand window.
