Catalogue Note

A graduate of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Sir Nathan Wright was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1670 and called to the bar in 1677. Between 1700 and 1705, during the reigns of William and Anne, he was Lord Keeper of the Great Seal and therefore charged with physical custody of the Great Seal of England, which he holds in the present work.

There is an unsigned version of this work, of the same dimensions, hanging in the Royal Courts of Justice, and in the Parliamentary Art Collection there is a bust length portrait of Sir Nathan Wright that is attributed to John Baptist Closterman (accession number WOA 6028).
