Description
- Portrait of a bearded man in a ruff, bust-length
- inscribed along the upper margin: ANNO DOMINI 1569 / AETATIS SUAE 47
- oil on oak panel, circular
Condition
The circular panel, composed of two vertical planks of wood, is cradled. The paint surface is secure, although the darks of the sitter's costume have sunk. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouchings to the left cheek, the upper part of the beard and the right hand side of the face. Further retouchings can be seen along the vertical joint faintly visible at the right, and to the curved bits of fabric separating the sleeves from the body of the costume. An even varnish covers the painting.
The work is offered in a black stained carved wood frame, in reasonable condition.
