Description

  • English School, 16th Century
  • Portrait of a lady, half-length, in a red dress
  • charged upper right with an unidentified coat of arms
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Panton family, Plas Gwyn, Pentraeth, Anglesey.

Condition

The panel, composed of three vertical planks of wood, is uncradled. The paint surface has dirtied and there are some areas of paint loss. These are most noticable along the lower margin and thinly scattered in the background to the left and right of the sitter. Inspection under ultraviolet reveals an even varnish and very few small scattered retouchings to the right arm. Otherwise the painting is free of retouchings. The work is offered in a wood carved frame with gilt decoration, in good condition.
