Description
- Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt
- Portrait of Prince Maurits of Orange (1567-1625)
- oil on copper
Exhibited
Winterthur, Museum Oskar Reinhart, Oranje! Meisterwerke holländischer Malerei, 29 November 2014 - 5 April 2015, no. 54
Condition
The small copper panel is thin and flat. It had been pinned to an old bevelled small oak panel of the same size, although it's now detached. The copper panel has small holes in each corner where it was pinned to the panel.
The paint surface is stable and the varnish is discoloured. There small areas of loss at each corner but otherwise no major visible damage. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals very little as it fluoresces opaque. It is just possible to make out some very small retouchings in the sitters cheek, and some minor strengthenings in the details on the shoulder of the sitters outfit, but beyond that it's hard to make out any restoration.
In seemingly good overall condition.
