Description

  • South German School, circa 1600
  • The Archangel Michael
  • oil and gold ground on panel

Condition

The uncradled panel is slightly bowed and the paint surface is dirty. The panel has a horizontal repaired split running the length of the picture though the figure of the saint, the retouching to which has now discoloured somewhat. There are minor paint losses on all four margins, and a hairline crack in the paint surface at the lower left, measuring approx. 10 cm. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals the aforementioned retouching to the vertical repaired split and strengthening to areas of the saints robes, particularly on the left. There are scattered retouchings in the saint's wings, in the bowls of the scales and minor touches in the surrounding clouds. In overall fair condition.
