Condition

Cavalry skirmish: The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. The panel has a repaired horizontal split running across the picture, approx. 6 cm. from the lower edge (just visible in the catalogue illustration). There are visible old, small discoloured retouchings throughout the sky. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a more recent campaign of restoration to the split and some pinprick retouchings in the clouds, centre. There is also some strengthening in the clouds. Soldiers outside a tented camp: The panel is flat and stable, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There is a hairline crack in the paint surface, running horizontally from the right-hand margin to the centre of the panel (visible in the catalogue illustration). There are some old discoloured retouchings in the sky, and evidence of wear in the clouds. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals strengthening in the coat and hat of the figures reclining in the foreground and a small patch of restoration to the head of the brown horse on the right of the group.
