Catalogue Note
This is one of a group of affiliated compositions which were once thought to be landscapes by Adriaen Brouwer, which clearly reflect his early style as well as that of Pieter Brueghel the Younger, but whose true authorship remains unknown. A second version, enlarged at the top of the composition to include some trees, was with the Rotterdam art dealer D. Vaarties in 1934, and seems to be a copy of the present panel.1
